  • Call for more action to clean up town centre...
ADDICTS shooting up in broad daylight, drug deals and underage drinking are taking place under the nose of Kirkcaldy police, it has been claimed.
Angry locals say they have witnessed appalling behaviour in the town's Hunter Street and Hill Street - just metres away from the police station – and they want action.

Last week, a concerned reader highlighted a situation near the entrance to Tesco which prompted another, who also didn't want their name published for fear of reprisals, to contact The Press.

In the initial letter, the concerned local witnessed a group of three people sitting to the right of the entrance of the supermarket – openly drinking and shouting.

He said: "How can this be allowed to happen in a public place during daylight hours? What's worse the town is supposed to be a drink free zone. These people were openly consuming alcohol just metres away from Kirkcaldy Police Station. Why isn't more done? "

A Kirkcaldy woman also highlighted a more serious situation witnessed by her family.

She said: "My daughter and son-in-law walked along the street behind Tesco with their new baby and were disgusted to see people openly passing drugs to each other. One man was trying to find a vein in his arm."

She said she has also seen youngsters worse the wear for drink or drugs.
She added: "These incidents were in the middle of the day. Everyone knows this goes on and has done for a long time."

Sergeant Paul Rennie of the Kirkcaldy Safer Towns Initiative, told The Press what is being done.

He said: "My town centre officers are aware of this problem and regularly patrol this area."

Over the last few months, he added, they have caught several people drinking in the street and issued them with fixed penalty tickets.

"More recently certain individuals who are known to frequent this area and who are well known to my officers have been the subject of bail conditions set by the courts.

''This prevents them from entering specified locations in and around the High Street area. This has proved extremely useful in reducing the number of calls received by the police about anti-social behaviour.

Another man has also been reported for possession of controlled drugs.
"The police, Fife Council and Kirkcaldy Town Centre Management are all working closely to continue to improve the image of the town centre and to keep it a safe and welcoming place for those who stay in Kirkcaldy and for the many visitors to the area.

"Where the police identify offences being committed appropriate action will be taken at all times. If you witness anti-social behaviour in this area then please call Fife Police on 0845 600 5702 or in emergency on 999."
