A new multi-million pound sports facility is planned for north east Fife by St Andrews' Old Course Hotel.

And it is being targeted at the top level national and international sports teams which already use the hotel as a base for training.

Artificial and natural grass pitches along with changing facilities are planned for the all-weather development at Winthank Farm, Denhead, close to the Duke’s Course, part of the Old Course Hotel complex. The pitches will be similar to those in use at Murrayfield.

Neil Gray of planning consultants Rapleys LLP explained that the hotel had hosted leading sports teams in the past, using training facilities elsewhere in the town.

“This is an investment by the hotel to grow that part of their business,” he added.

It is believed that the hotel, owned by the American Kohler Company, hopes to start work soon.

A statement from the Old Course Hotel said only that the plans would be revealed at a consultation session in Cameron on June 29. A proposal of planning application notice has been lodged with Fife Council, and details of the public consultation will be advertised within days.
