McGlynn blasts 'stupid' Raith skipper
- Team captain's antics could lead to the drop
RAITH Rovers captain Iain Davidson could face the drop after a night of shame at Cliftonhill.
Davidson was sent off during the League Cup tie on Tuesday for two bookings that John McGlynn branded "totally stupid", then made matters worse by making offensive gestures to Albion Rovers fans as he left the pitch.
The 24-year-old is certain to be fined by the club and could even lose his place in the team — although McGlynn is set to stop short of stripping him of the captaincy.
"I'm really disappointed with Iain because I've given him the captaincy and he didn't show the responsibility of a captain," the manager said.
"Whether he keeps his place or not, that's one I'll have to stew on between now and Saturday."
McGlynn did suggest however that the shamed skipper, who will be suspended for the next round of the cup, will keep the armband for now. "Everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves," he said.
Both Davidson's cautions were for kicking the ball away in frustration at decisions of the referee — a trademark that the midfielder had appeared to eradicate from his game.
"We thought we were winning with Iain's discipline and the captaincy appeared to have done him good, but everything went wrong on Tuesday," McGlynn said. "We've taken a step backwards.
"I don't think it's a side of Iain that's irreversible, he's still young enough to kick the bad habits."
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Raith scraped into the next round via a penalty shoot-out and McGlynn hopes the players' excersions don't have a bearing on Saturday's first home match of the league season against Queen's Park.
"We've not done ourselves any favours by playing for 120 minutes, and around 45 with 10 men, so it's not ideal by any matter of means," McGlynn said.
"We have a few niggles from the game that we're hoping clear up in time because it's a vitally important game."
McGlynn stressed the need to avoid a repeat of last season's home struggles as most teams took points from their travels to Kirkcaldy.
"Queen's Park were one of a number of teams that came to Stark's Park, defended well and caught us on the break," he said.
"It will be up to us to turn the screw at home and get the win. We need to score when we're on top and kills teams off."
While Rovers have started the season with two clean sheets, they have yet to score and McGlynn is keen for his side to break their duck on Saturday.
"We've not scored yet but I'm still quite confident goals will come," he said. "If we can get the breakthrough on Saturday we'll grow in confidence.
"The clean sheets are obviously very pleasing, we just need to get these chances we're creating into the back of the net."
SportsPress understands that Spanish midfielder Juan Angel Carreras, who featured as a substitute in preseason games against Hibs and Dundee United, is set to sign for the Kirkcaldy club.
"We're hoping that, in time, he will adjust to Scottish football," McGlynn expressed.
RAITH are at home to Ross County in the Challenge Cup second round on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45 p.m.
