- David won't let spill ruin his great start at Raith
DAVID McGurn has only made one mistake since joining Raith Rovers ... and it cost his team a goal.
The unlucky goalkeeper has been in outstanding form since joining John McGlynn's side from Morton in the summer, but had to shoulder the blame for Alloa's opener on Saturday.
He was back-peddling to collect an over-hit cross ball when he collided with his own crossbar, dropped the ball and ended up in a heap as the ball was knocked into his gaping net.
"I've stepped back and caught the ball, and it's hit the bar on the way down," the 27-year-old explained.
"I should have just pushed it over the bar — I'll know next time.
"The sun was in my eyes but I seen it fine, and I actually caught it, but as I was coming down it's hit the crossbar and that's knocked it out of my hands unfortunately."
McGurn is not prepared to let his one and only error ruin what has been a great start to his career at Raith.
"You say a couple of swear words then just get on with it," he said.
"You can't let it affect your game because you could lose the next one as well.
"Two minutes later they put a similar cross into the box and I've came out and caught it. You can't let things get to you or you could end up losing two or three.
"It's the nature of the position but I'm thick-skinned."
McGurn's blushes were spared by Kevin Smith who won Raith a point with an equalising goal.
"It was a good goal by Smudger and reward for our hard work," the goalie said.
"We're disappointed we didn't get the three points but it's a hard place to come, and a point continues our good start to the season so far. The boys dominated, we just needed a wee break in the box to finish them off."
The number one position at Raith has been secured by McGurn, who fought off stiff competition from fellow new signing Garry O'Connor to claim the jersey.
"I'm happy with my performances so far," he said.
"Gary and I work hard in training and I'm delighted to keep him out, although if I keep making mistakes I'm sure he'll be in.
"I'm just happy that the gaffer has picked me but we both work hard and I know that if I drop my standards in training or games Gary's good enough to come in.
"That's how you get the best out of the team."
McGurn called time on a five-year spell at Morton during the summer and is relishing the challenge of winning the Second Division with another club.
"We want to go and win this league this year," he said. "Play-offs are alright but you need to win the league to get out of this division.
"The team has been stuck in this division, mainly because of the play-offs, so we need to win the league.
"I want to play in the First Division. I was there last year, going to good grounds, playing good teams and it brings the best out of you.
"Everybody's aim in the dressing room is to go and win this league. We're good enough, we just need to show it over the period of the season."
